Foods that could help prevent cancer or help fight abnormal cell growth in people diagnosed with cancer include:

1. Avocados: This green fruit (yes, fruit) has chemicals rich in antioxidants that attack free radicals within the body (free radicals are thought to be a major contributor to cancer and other diseases). Avocados are known for helping fight liver cancer and liver damage.

2. Chili peppers and jalapenos: These peppers, as well as other hot peppers, contain capsaicin. Capsaicin is a chemical that neutralizes cancer-causing substances, such as the nitrosamines that lead to stomach cancer.

3. Broccoli: This hearty green has been known to help prevent colon and prostate cancers.

4. Flax: Flax contains antioxidants, and when the seeds are crushed, oils to help fight cancer are released. Flax is considered to be one of the most effective foods for fighting cancer and protecting your heart against heart disease.

5. Garlic: Don’t let the odor stop you – garlic is wonderful for your immune system. It is believed to block carcinogens and slow the development and growth of tumors. Garlic has also been shown to help fight against stomach cancer.

6. Grapefruits, oranges, and grapes: Citrus fruits such as grapefruit and oranges have the amazing power to literally push carcinogens out of the body. They contain high levels of Vitamin C, folic acid and beta carotene, which can inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells. FOLK REMEDIES THAT WORK

Not every winter illness requires a trip to the doctor’s office. The following time-tested folk remedies offer effective, inexpensive treatments for minor health complaints.
Important: Consult your doctor if your condition persists or grows worse.
COLDS
Garlic.
Cinnamon, sage and bay.
Chicken soup.

SORE THROATS
Experiment with these remedies until you find what works best for you...
Apple cider vinegar. Add two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to six ounces of warm water. Gargle with a mouthful, spit it out, then drink a mouthful. Continue this until the mixture is gone. Rinse your mouth with water to prevent the vinegar from eroding your teeth. Repeat the vinegar gargle every hour for as long as your sore throat persists.
Sage. Sage is an anti-inflammatory. Add one teaspoon of dried sage to one six-ounce cup of boiling water. Steep for three to five minutes, strain, then gargle and swallow.
Lemon and honey. Honey coats the throat, while lemon can temporarily reduce the mucus buildup that often accompanies a sore throat. Squeeze one lemon, add a teaspoon of honey and drink. Repeat every two hours.
COUGHS
Try these folk remedies to figure out which works best for you...
Lemon, honey and olive oil. Honey and olive oil coat and soothe, while lemon reduces mucus. Heat one cup of honey, a half cup of olive oil and the juice of one lemon over a medium flame for five minutes. Turn off the heat, and stir for two minutes to blend the ingredients. Consume one teaspoon of the mixture every two hours.
Vinegar and cayenne pepper. Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, a proven painkiller, while vinegar serves as an anti-inflammatory. Add a half cup of apple cider vinegar and one teaspoon of cayenne pepper to one-half cup of water. Add honey if desired. Take one tablespoon when your cough acts up and another tablespoon before bed.
Horseradish and honey. Horseradish can help loosen mucus, while honey coats the throat. Grate one teaspoon of fresh, peeled horseradish into two teaspoons of honey. Consume one teaspoon every two to three hours.
Ginger. Ginger is an anti-inflammatory that contains gingerols, which provide pain-reducing and sedative benefits. Chew a piece of fresh, peeled gingerroot when you feel the cough acting up, usually in the evening before bed. Chew until the ginger loses its kick.

NO SHOTS FOR ME...AND YOU

This year it is more important that you protect your children and loved ones from the flu vaccines than influenza itself. This article on Lew Rockwell discusses how:
1...The swine flu is simply another flu. It is not unusually deadly.

8...Most seasonal influenza A (H1N1) virus strains tested from the United States and other countries are now resistant to Tamiflu (oseltamivir). Tamiflu has become a nearly worthless drug against seasonal flu.
9...Public health officials are irresponsible in their omission of any ways to strengthen immunity against the flu. No options outside of problematic vaccines and anti-flu drugs are offered, despite the fact there is strong evidence that vitamins C and D activate the immune system and the trace mineral selenium prevents the worst form of the disease.

SWINE FLU SHOT

Preliminary research suggests the seasonal flu shot may put people at greater risk for getting swine flu, CBC News has learned.

"This is some evidence that has been floated. It hasn't been validated yet, it's very preliminary," cautioned Dr. Don Low, microbiologist-in-chief at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto.

Four Canadian studies involved about 2,000 people, health officials told CBC News. Researchers found people who had received the seasonal flu vaccine in the past were more likely to get sick with the H1N1 virus.

SUPERFOODS FOR YOUR BRAIN

For those suffering from dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, some degree of cognitive impairment, mild memory loss and diminished alertness, as well as brain-related disorders, such as depression and chronic anxiety...

Research clearly shows that some foods can improve mental performance and help prevent long-term damage. Best choices...

Sardines. They have two to three times more omega-3 fatty acids than most other fatty fish. Our bodies use omega-3s for the efficient transmission of brain signals. People who don’t get enough omega-3s in their diets are more likely to experience learning disabilities, dementia and depression.

Recommended: Three cans of sardines a week. Sardines are less likely to accumulate mercury or other toxins than larger fish.

If you don’t like sardines, you can take fish oil supplements (1,000 mg twice a day).

Omega-3 eggs. They’re among the best foods for the brain because they contain folate along with omega-3s and choline. Folate is a B vitamin that’s strongly linked to mood and mental performance.

Recommended: Up to eight eggs a week. Only buy eggs that say "Omega-3" on the label. It means that the chickens were given a fish meal diet. Eggs without this label contain little or no omega-3s.

Low-glycemic carbohydrates. The glycemic index ranks foods according to how quickly they elevate glucose in the blood. Foods with low glycemic ratings include legumes (beans, lentils) and whole-grain breads. They slow the release of sugars into the bloodstream and prevent sharp rises in insulin. Try the Renewal protocol.

Why it matters: Elevated insulin is associated with dementia. Elevated insulin damages blood vessels as well as neurons.

Recommended: Always eat natural, minimally processed foods. They’re almost always low on the glycemic index. For example, eat apples instead of applesauce... whole-grain bread instead of white bread... or any of the legumes, such as chickpeas, lentils or soybeans.

Nuts. They’re among the few plant foods that contain appreciable amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. They also contain antioxidants, which reduce brain and arterial inflammation that can lead to cognitive decline.

Recommended: One to two handfuls daily. Walnuts and macadamia nuts are among the highest in omega-3s, but all nuts are beneficial. Avoid highly salted and roasted nuts (the roasting changes the composition of the oils). Lightly toasted is okay.

Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower and kale. They contain detoxifying compounds that help the liver eliminate toxins that can damage the hippocampus and other areas of the brain involved in cognition.

Recommended: One cup daily is optimal, but at least four cups a week. Cooked usually is easier to digest than raw.

B-12 foods. Meat, dairy products and seafood are our only source (apart from supplements) of vitamin B-12 in the diet. This nutrient is critical for brain health.

Recommended: Two to three daily servings of organic lean meat, low-fat dairy (including yogurt) or seafood. Also important: I advise everyone to take a multi-nutrient supplement that includes all of the B vitamins.

Green tea. It’s a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that also stimulates the liver’s ability to break down toxins. New research indicates that green tea improves insulin sensitivity -- important for preventing diabetes and neuro-damaging increases in insulin.

Recommended: One to two cups daily.

Berries, including blueberries, raspberries and strawberries. The darker the berry, the higher the concentration of antioxidant compounds. In studies at Tufts University, animals fed blueberries showed virtually no oxidative brain damage.

Recommended: One-half cup daily. Frozen berries contain roughly the same level of protective compounds as fresh berries.
